The Fire and Emergency Services Training Institute (FESTI) is registered as a private career college under the Private Career Colleges Act, 2005, by the Ministry of Training Colleges and Universities and is listed under Greater Toronto Airports Authority (PCC- 113530).

FESTI’s National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1001 Level I - II Firefighter Training is one of a kind, and offers a new and exciting approach to fire training in Canada, and is approved as a vocational program under the Private Career Colleges Act, 2005, by the Ministry of Training Colleges and Universities. Additionally our course is recognized by the Office of the Fire Marshal and Emergency Management (OFMEM) and the Ontario Association of Fire Chiefs (OAFC).

The FESTI Pre-Service Firefighter Training Program is designed by Fire Chiefs to meet the demands of today's Fire Service. Fire Chiefs are seeking candidates who have experience in all aspects of the Fire Service including history, culture, fire department routines, communications, rank structure and extensive exposure to emergency operations. The FESTI program meets and exceeds all of these requirements.

Our course is designed using a Systematic Approach to education principals; what is learned in class is immediately put into practice utilizing our onsite, state of the art training facility. Our optimum class size and five-to-one student instructor ratio during practical evolutions maximizes your learning experience.

During the final week of the program you will challenge the Ontario Fire Marshal's Office (OFM) Provincial exam and practical skills assessment which is proctored at FESTI. Upon successful completion you will receive IFSAC and Pro Board seals demonstrating your successful achievement of the NFPA 1001 level I & II, NFPA 472 Hazardous Materials Operations level and NFPA 1006 Chapter 5 standards. Additionally you will receive the internationally recognized Accreditation from the Institution of Fire Engineers.

The NFPA certified staff instructing the program bring their wealth of experience and expertise to the classroom and field training exercises. The program combines current and comprehensive theoretical firefighting knowledge with industry leading practical skills development. This program is designed to maximize your practical experience with over 50% of the time spent participating in practical hands-on skills development. This level of practical experience cannot be found with any other College program.

Application Requirements:  


Copies of Pre-Requisites must be uploaded/attached as part of the application process.

  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD, equivalent or mature student status).
    An applicant who does not have a high school diploma or equivalent, and will have reached the age of 19 years on or before the start of the program may select the mature student route.
  • Mature students who are unable to demonstrate the educational requirements must successfully complete the Canadian Adult Achievement Testing (CAAT- D) mature student assessment for English only, prior to admission into a program. Please contact the Registrar for more information.
  • High School Transcripts demonstrating Grade 12 English (ENG4C or ENG4U).
  • Complete Pre-Service Firefighter Training Application Form.

Admission Requirements:  


Copies of the following must be supplied with final payment no later than 30 days prior to your program start date.

  • Copy of a valid Standard First Aid/CPR Level C or Health Care Provider certificate. (valid for entire program)
  • Minimum 20/30 vision in both eyes with no significant color deficiency.(will impact future job possibilities)
  • Complete Physical Activity Readiness Questionnaire (Form 1A) If you answer yes to any of the questions you must have a doctor complete and sign (Form 1B).

Mature Student Testing Dates - Testing starts at 08:30 am at FESTI. Please contact FESTI for available dates. 

Dress Code 

In preparation for your career in the fire service you will be required to maintain a high level of dress and deportment throughout the program. All uniforms will be provided. Black safety shoes with CSA green tag must be supplied by the student.  

Employment Opportunities  

Graduates of this program may obtain employment in Fire Departments throughout Canada, Industry and Natural Resources-Forest Fire Fighting services.

The Fire and Emergency Services Training Institute does not guarantee employment for any student who successfully completes a vocational program offered by The Fire and Emergency Services Training Institute.

  •  2 weeks Emergency Medical Responder Course (EMR)
  • 15 weeks Pre-Service Firefighting

Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Unless otherwise required.
